Solutions for Common Pregnancy Complaints
There are many changes that take place in a woman’s body when she becomes pregnant and as the baby grows within her. There are also many resources that detail the “complaints of pregnancy.” Virtually every pregnancy book lists these complaints and offers solutions for them. I will concentrate on those most often presented in my practice, and the solutions most of my clients find helpful.
Nausea
The increased hormones in pregnancy cause over-production of stomach acids. I recommend eating every two to three hours, even through the night. Keeping something in the stomach seems to minimize the effect of these acids. Also, either drinking mint or ginger tea or sucking on mint or ginger candy or chewing mint or ginger gum often provides a calming effect on the stomach.
Leg Cramps
Try eating a baked potato with sour cream or have a banana with a glass of milk at bedtime. Or take a potassium supplement and consider also a supplement of calcium citrate with vitamin D and magnesium (this will have the added benefit of helping you sleep better when taken within an hour of bedtime).
Indigestion or Heartburn
Eat small meals (eat something every couple of hours rather than concentrating on three meals a day), and limit spicy and greasy foods. Try slowly chewing a pinch of raw oatmeal when experiencing discomfort. Antacids are an option but I suggest limiting their use.
Headaches
Headaches are another side effect of the increased hormones of pregnancy. Ensure consumption of at least 75 to 100 grams of protein a day, a minimum of two liters of water each day, and some form of regular exercise. Many women find relief with essential oils. My favorite is a drop or two of peppermint oil on the temples. If the headaches persist, an over-the-counter pain reliever is an option, but I encourage limiting their use. Occasionally one of my moms benefits from a progesterone cream.
There are many discomforts that can be experienced in a normal, healthy pregnancy. Most of them can be dealt with relatively easily. The good news is that they do not last forever!

Midwifery first called to me when I became pregnant with my second daughter and discovered the difficulty of finding a midwife who would support and attend me in having a homebirth. The midwife I finally found after much searching suggested I apprentice so I could assist other women in my community who might also desire to explore homebirth as an option.
I am blessed with five beautiful daughters and am married to a local carpenter. Three of my children were born at home and the last was a waterbirth. Having experienced both hospital and homebirth, I feel uniquely qualified to serve laboring women in the pursuit of their desired way to birth.

Reflux is a condition babies can develop through having a weak stomach valve, that allows the milk in your babies stomach or food, to come back up the throat, burning it with stomach acid and most commonly, whatever is on the way back up is projectile vomited out. However there is also silent reflux, which can sometimes be unnoticed or misdiagnosed, where your baby has all the above, but is not projectile vomiting. As this is the main sign of reflux some doctors may not be willing to put the rest of the symptoms down to reflux. You may notice that when your baby is feeding, he or she suddenly takes a deep swallow, like a gulp then bursts out crying, this may be your baby swallowing back down what was on the way up. If you suspect your baby has silent reflux, take your baby to the GP and explain the symptoms. If you are dismissed in anyway, make sure you stand your ground and ask for your child to be tested. Reflux really begins to show at about 5 weeks of age, as your baby gradually begins to take more milk. Before this time, as most mums feed little and often, babies are more settled. Signs of reflux are fussing and screaming whilst feeding, baby arching its back while feeding, Gulping quickly when feeding then screaming, excessive drooling and being very unhappy whenever baby is laid flat. If you suspect your baby suffers from this condition, see your GP immediately and be firm about having your baby tested. If your baby has mild reflux, you will most likely be recommended to change babies formula (if bottle feeding), to one of the formulas specifically designed to be thicker and easier to digest to help stop the milk coming up as easily. Omneo Comfort from Cow and Gate has a great reputation for helping with reflux and even better, in the uk it can be got on prescription. If you breast feed you may be prescribed infant gaviscon, which you will need to administer to your baby before each feed, following the instructions that come with it. In some cases the reflux is severe and your GP will sort out the appropriate medicine to help combat it. Reflux most commonly gets better with the introduction of solid foods and by the time your baby reaches the end of the first year. Below are some other tips for helping your baby: * When feeding your baby try to keep baby as upright as possible to help stop the milk coming back up. * Feeding little and often and make sure baby is properly winded will help some babies. * Once finished feeding avoid lying your baby flat on its back, keep baby up right for a good half hour. * Prop babies cot up at one end, either with a pillow under the mattress or books under two of the legs of the cot so your baby sleeps with its head higher than its body.

Are you interested in a career in nursing? If yes, then you have made the right choice as the field of nursing has expanded during the past several years. Now you can choose from several nursing career avenues after acquiring a nursing degree. Nursing is considered as one of the noblest professions and nowadays-nursing jobs are an important part of our society. Nursing jobs are generally classified as registered nurses, licensed practicing nurses, nursing assistants or licensed vocational nurses. Inside the nursing field, you can opt for different job options. Here are some of them:
. Hospital nurse- In a hospital, the nursing staff is divided as per the floors or the units to treat patients depending on illnesses and conditions, human medical needs, newborn babies and even dying seniors. Nurses have to gather information from patients based on their physical condition, life style, emotional state, family, hopes and fears etc. Nurses assist doctors in surgery as well as handling the patient’s needs that are often based on emotional or spiritual or physical assistance.
Nurses are considered the ‘eyes’ of the doctor and the ‘voice’ of the patient. They plan the goals based on the diagnosed report. Whenever possible, nurses encourage patients to participate in health care. Nurses also have to go ahead and teach the patients about self-care and display physiotherapy exercises to improve flexibility after surgery.
. Nursing Ability- Professional nurses are hired by temporary rehabilitation centers, recuperation units and also as nursing care for senior citizens who need help. While handling patients, the nurses have to be tolerant, loving and understanding. They are supposed to maintain their cool and work non-stop to make a patient’s life better and comfortable.

. Company Nurse- Large business houses hire nurses as part of their staff to handle health issues of their employees. In a company, the nurse should be able to recognize and treat viral fever like flu or eye injuries or bodily wounds. Nurses hired by companies have to be well versed to handle the first aid techniques and they have the full authority to seek medical assistance if they find the environmental problem very uncomfortable or polluted with gas leak, hazardous levels of carbon monoxide etc. The nurses are obliged to recommend a company to temporarily shut down if essential.

There is so much controversy surrounding homebirth; many people in our country are simply appalled at the suggestion that homebirth still exists. At the same time, there are those who would not consider birthing any other way. There are several studies that indicate no difference in outcome for a healthy mother and baby experiencing a healthy pregnancy. However, homebirth is still very much the exception in the U.S.
I have no doubt that many more would consider homebirth if they understood more about modern birth practices. There is a new video available through most video rental stores called “The Business of Being Born.” It is a documentary by Ricki Lake and Abbie Epstein that depicts the history of modern birth practices and showcases the depth and power of homebirth, contrasting it with hospital birth. There is no doubt that a natural birth enhances mother/baby bonding and eases breastfeeding.
If women knew what they were giving up, I am certain they would overwhelmingly choose to birth their babies naturally. The difficulty with birthing naturally in the hospital is the unfamiliar surroundings, the unfamiliar staff, and the immediate “option” of pain relief. While birth is an intense process and it is difficult to not want relief, women who successfully birth naturally indisputably experience a “high” that is indescribable. Additionally, there is something about making it through, reaching deep into ourselves for an inner strength we did not know we had. It is a rite of passage that most women in America no longer get to experience. It is something that we can carry forward into those long nights awake with a sick baby, the difficulties of raising a teenager, all the challenges that life throws at us; we know where to reach inside for that place of strength we might not otherwise know how to access.
One thing is certain: mothers who birth naturally in the intimacy and familiar comfort of their homes generally experience greater bonding with their babies, greater success with breastfeeding, and closer-knit families. Perhaps this is all a reflection of who they are; perhaps it is because there was not a disruption of the natural hormones and pheromones present at a birth with no interventions.

The first reaction to early sign of pregnancy is disbelief, joy followed by a feeling of uncertainty. A visit to the doctor and a blood test is the only way to confirm your pregnancy. Early pregnancy tests are very reliable and even show the accurate results of a 2-week-old embryo. Before the visit to a doctor for the confirmation of pregnancy, it is very important to watch out for pregnancy symptoms. The precautions taken during early sign of pregnancy is very important for embryos health and well being. Some of the most recognizable signs of pregnancy are as follows.
Classic pregnancy symptoms
These pregnancy symptoms appear soon after fertilization, within 8-10 days after conception. Some of the pregnancy symptoms stay with you for the entire period of gestation, while some pregnancy symptoms disappear as the pregnancy advances. They stop troubling you as your body starts getting used to change in hormones and settles to the imminent body changes. A few temporary early signs of pregnancy are:
Missed periods or less bleeding at the onset of periods. The absence of periods during the duration of pregnancy is because now the uterine lining need not be shed but used for implantation of the embryo.
Lower abdominal cramps, which begin soon after the implantation of embryo, disappear within a week or two. Headaches caused by rising levels of hormones in the first few days of pregnancy too disappear once the body accepts the change in hormonal levels.
The pregnancy symptoms that last the entire period of pregnancy are:
Nausea and vomiting are the early signs of pregnancy starting in the second week itself. The degree in which you feel sick varies from full fledged to none as the pregnancy advances. It is fairly controlled during the third trimester, making you feel more relaxed and happy.
Tender and swollen breasts appear soon after conception and stays with you till the entire period. It is the natures way to make the breast ready for babys breastfeeding. In the last trimester the breasts secrete a liquid called colostrums, which provides immunity to the baby.
Enlarging and darkening of areola is the first sign of pregnancy, and lasts throughout.
Frequent urination and constipation is early sign of pregnancy and increases with the advancing pregnancy due to the pressure of the growing embryo on the surrounding body organs.
Exhaustion and tiredness occurs from initial stages of pregnancy and stay the entire duration of the gestation.
Food cravings for a particular type of food are still an unsolved mystery. Some doctors feel this is the way the body acquires the adequate minerals required by the growing embryo. This pregnancy symptom is an early sign of pregnancy and stays on till the end.
Increased sense of smell and taste too varies in all stages of pregnancy.
If you experience these pregnancy symptoms then take care of your health. Avoid harmful products; start taking balanced diet and some extra folic acid for happy and healthy pregnancy.
